Chapter 480: Against an SSS+ Rank monster
Chapter 480: Against an SSS+ Rank monster
Even though they were fighting together for the first time, their coordination was seamless. Both knew the extent of each other’s abilities and were constantly creating openings for the other to land a decisive blow.
More and more black blood poured from the creature’s wounds. Where it met the ground, thick smoke rose alongside a sizzling sound. They knew that if even a drop touched their skin, it would be over.
While they were locked in the fierce exchange, the Soul Eaters across its body let out a terrible, wet, guttural roar.
Within seconds, hundreds of Soul Eaters began converging on the location from across the city, surrounding the duo from every direction.
But before they could join the fight, the awakeners arrived and struck them from behind.
"How could you two just run off on your own?" Rocky shouted from atop a mound of rubble, a trident in hand.
"Jesus Christ, what is that thing?" Noah gasped from the other side, bow raised. "Guys, I think we’ve found the Boss Monster."
From there, the A-Rankers formed a perimeter so the Soul Eaters could not break through, while the ten S-Rankers engaged the anomaly directly.
Saintess Riya held position inside the perimeter as well, though rather than joining the assault, she provided the attacking unit with buff and healing spells from the rear.
The creature had an obscenely high regeneration rate, surpassing even that of trolls.
It was holding its own against the S-Rankers. The dark blood seeping from its body had spread into a pool of corrosive poison across the ground, severely restricting the movement of the attack unit. It missed no openings, landing continuous injuries across the S-Rankers. Had it not been for Saintess Riya’s spells suppressing the corruption’s spread, it would have already brought half of them down.
"Everyone, hold it back for a few seconds," Theodore commanded, retreating several feet.
It was a difficult ask, but the squad responded without hesitation. Rocky kept the creature’s attacks at bay with smooth, sweeping deflections of his trident. Noah rained a barrage of water-element arrows from the rear. The remaining awakeners pressed their assault on the Soul Eaters fused to the creature’s body while Aryan continued his heavy strikes against the creature itself.
After a few seconds, Theodore’s voice cut through the chaos.
"Everyone, step back!"
The rankers pulled away in unison, and the moment they cleared the line, Theodore hurled his spear forward. It spun along its axis in a rapid, drilling motion, its tip blazing with a concentrated golden light.
"Spear of the Lion King: The Final Hunt."
Along the shaft, the full form of a lion materialized, its jaws stretched wide open, the tip of the spear burning like a star between its teeth.
The spear struck the creature’s torso with a thunderous impact. Blinding golden light erupted from the point of contact, washing the awakeners’ faces white against the surrounding dark. When the light slowly faded, a gaping hole had been torn through the creature’s body, blood and flesh spilling outward from a slowly rising column of smoke.
The Soul Eaters across its body fell limp all at once. The creature’s frame buckled, bent forward, and crashed to the ground.
"Hah... hah... finally it’s over," Aryan gasped, leaning forward on his axe.
"W-we won..." Noah said in a low whisper, as though settling the reality for himself before his voice broke into a shout. "Hahaha, we won! We defeated the strongest monster in history!"
The A-Rankers erupted behind him.
"The Lion King has slain an SSS+ Ranked monster!"
"Lion King!"
"Lion King!"
"Lion King!"
Loud cheers filled the battlefield, every voice chanting the same name. Theodore had become the first awakener in history to slay an SSS+ Ranked monster.
"I’m taking a year off after this," Theodore exhaled tiredly, lowering himself onto the rubble to catch his breath.
"That last attack was something else," Aryan said, a faint smile on his face, standing before him.
"I couldn’t have done it without you and the other S-Rankers," Theodore replied. He extended his hand and added, "It was good fighting alongside you."
"Likewise," Aryan answered, taking it with a firm clap.
While the others savored the celebration and recovered their breath, Leo moved toward the fallen creature’s body.
"I should take this for research," he murmured, crouching down.
From the space pouch at his waist, he produced a hand-sized capsule. It was a pocket-sized containment device designed to extract monster bodies from dungeons, capable of expanding and contracting at will.
Just as Leo was about to activate it, Noah’s voice came from behind.
"Who said you could take the corpse, Leo?"
"I risked my life in this dungeon. I have every right to that body," Leo shot back with a sharp glare.
"You weren’t the only one who fought that creature. We all have an equal claim," Noah said, his brows drawing together.
"As if I care. If you wanted it that badly, you should have gotten here first," Leo replied, activating the capsule.
As it began to expand, Leo continued with a smirk, "I’ll be the only one walking away with this bod—"
Before he could finish the sentence, both the capsule and his body were split clean down the middle.
His body parted like the pages of an opened book and he crumpled to the ground.
In that instant, every awakener on the battlefield went completely still, unable to draw a single breath. A crushing, suffocating pressure had descended over the entire area. It felt as though an invisible hand had closed around each of their throats, and the certainty was immediate and absolute: any movement would mean death.
Even Aryan and Theodore were not spared.
’What is this pressure? Where is it coming from?’ Aryan thought, his pupils contracting as his gaze darted wildly around in search of the source of that overwhelming presence.
And there it was. A humanoid dark figure stood before the corpse of the monster they had just killed. In its hand, it carried a longsword nearly ten feet long, while its eyes glowed with trails of blue energy.
